Las universidades como institutos de enseñanza superior surgieron en la Edad Media. Al principio eran simples asociaciones de estudiantes que contrataban a sus profesores para que les enseñasen. La primera universidad se creó en Bolonia, Italia, en 1119, y la segunda en París, Francia, en 1150. La palabra universidad viene del latín "universitas", que significa universal, es decir, que comprendía todos los conocimientos. Los cursos consistían en explicaciones y comentarios de textos antiguos, y después de varios exámenes se otorgaban los grados de bachiller, licenciado y maestro. Los estudiantes, llegados de distintos países, se agrupaban en naciones o colegios distinguiéndose por la vestimenta por detalles de las mismas. Los profesores vestían una túnica larga y un abrigo con adorno de pieles. También se cubrían con una especie de capa con aberturas a los costados para dejar pasar los brazos.
